Hoshiarpur has immense potential for overall industrial development. But its geographical situation posed a major blockage to its industries. In the pre independence era, this district had ample number of artisans producing lacquer and ivory items but the migration of Muslim workers during partition in 1947 gave a setback to these industries. Though, they were revived later by the local craftsmen of Hoshiarpur and till date, they are a major source of revenue for them. To boost up the local industries, government initiated many rural industries projects and Rural Industries Project Organization in 1972-73.

Before the advent of these industries in Hoshiarpur, there were products like brass utensils, embroidered juttis, cotton durries, khaddar, pottery, paddy, wool industry, and jute mats. Most of these industries have become extinct with passage of times while some are in the phase of revival with government support and aid. Now, machine made products have largely replaced hand made goods in this district as well. Most of these handmade items are now restricted to the small farmers living in rural areas who manufacture them for personal usage only.

This factor led to declaration of Hoshiarpur as industrially backward district in 1970. The series of steps and infrastructural development started since then. Subsidy and concessional finance was provided to the new entrepreneurs to encourage industrial development in the region. Due to these efforts, industries in this region have been revived to grow significantly and enhance the scope of industrial growth here.
